Two parts that make a conveyor turn: the motorised drive drum that pulls the belt, and the return idler that carries it back. They are quoted together here because a drum is ordered against the same belt width and the same tonnage as the return side, and because a failed drum is usually found by looking at the belt it stopped.

The motorised drum: what is inside it

A YTH motorised drum carries the motor, the coupling and a hardened-tooth planetary gear inside the drum shell. Nothing sticks out, nothing needs a drive guard, and the whole drive occupies the width of the pulley - which is why it is the default on mobile and compact plants, and why it survives a dusty site where an exposed chain drive does not.

The gear is the part that decides the life. Hardened-tooth planetary gearing runs quietly and takes shock loading from a jaw crusher discharge, and the oil in the drum is its own lubrication system: overfilling and underfilling both end the same way, in a hot drum and a stripped gear.

Why the return side is in this page

The return idlers under a conveyor are the cheapest items on it and the ones most often left out of a spares order. They carry the empty belt, they set the belt line on the way back, and a single seized return idler will pull a belt off-centre faster than any misaligned drum.

The return side is specified by the same belt width as the drum, so both are quoted from one measurement. The second table gives the TD75 return idler set for each width.

Drum versus external drive - the trade

A motorised drum is compact, guarded by design and needs no alignment after installation. An external drive - motor, gearbox, coupling, drive pulley - is easier to repair with site labour and lets you change ratio without changing the drum. On a plant that runs one shift, the drum is the simpler answer; on a plant that runs continuously and keeps fitters, the external drive is easier to keep alive.

Either way the drum diameter is set by the belt: too small a drum and the belt carcass takes more bend cycles per revolution than it was built for.
